Person Centred Counselling
Person centred counselling comes from the belief that everyone is fundamentally good and has the ability to grow. The founder of person centred counselling (Carl Rogers) recognised that the clients are the experts in their own lives and we will all have different experiences. Rogers believed that under the right therapeutic conditions a client could be their authentic self and begin their journey of growth.
“The most valuable kind of help I can give is the kind of psychological climate or psychological atmosphere that I can create” (Rogers, 1960)
The Core Conditions
The Core Conditions describes the abilities Carl Rogers believed where necessary in counselling for a client to begin their journey towards change and growth.
Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand the emotions a client is feeling and having feelings of our own ignited through the clients experience. Empathy allows for a better understanding of the client's view point and experience of the world.
Unconditional Positive Regard
Congruence
Unconditional Positive Regard is the ability of being able to provide a client a safe space in which there is no judgement and the client can be accepted fully for who they are. Accepting no one is perfect and we all have our imperfections.
Congruence is when our emotions and our actions match each other. Congruence shows that we are being our authentic selves. By being our true selves in the counselling relationship, we create a safe space of exploration and growth.
